The 7.62x39mm cartridge was designed in 1943 for use in the RPD Machine Gun and put into service in 1944 in the Soviet Union. It’s a rimless, bottleneck cartridge preferred by quite a few shooters for its ability to perform well despite extreme temperatures. In tests it continued to function well at ranges between -50 Celsius (-58 Fahrenheit) and 50 Celsius (122 Fahrenheit); whether freezing cold or blazing hot, the 7.62x39mm functioned well without failures or malfunctions. This cartridge was the result of a collaboration between leading designers including chief designer NM Elizarov and Fedorov, Tokarev, Simonov, and Shpagin. The resulting round has the following specifications:
- Bullet diameter: 7.92mm
- Neck diameter: 8.60mm
- Shoulder diameter: 10.07mm
- Base diameter: 11.35mm
- Rim diameter: 11.35mm
- Rim thickness: 1.50mm
- Case length: 38.70mm
- Overall length: 56.00mm
- Case capacity: 2.31cm cubed
- Rifling twist: 240mm
- Primer type: Boxer and Berdan
- Maximum pressure: 355.0 MPa (51,490 psi)
- Filling: SSNF 50 powder
- Filling weight: 1.605-1.63gm
There are 20 rounds in this box of ammunition. At 124 grain these are lightweight rounds for the cartridge, making them capable of greater speed. They’re Full Metal Jacket rounds and don’t expand on impact; they’re meant for target practice, tactical training, and those days you just want to hit your favorite outdoor spot and do some plinking. Each round flies down-range with fantastic speed with a muzzle velocity of 2330 feet per second. If you want to feed your rifle without simultaneously draining your bank account, try these target rounds from Wolf.
Wolf is part of the Tula Arms Plant, an ammunition manufacturer in Tula, Russia, with more than 300 years of experience. Over those centuries they’ve kept up with the latest technology and come up with new, innovative ways to produce ammunition. In order to save you money, they use their own bimetal layering process, alternating thin layers of steel and copper to create these steel cases. The finished rounds are coated with a special polymer for smooth feeding and ejecting and to resist corrosion. These steel cases are berdan primed to ensure ignition and for a longer shelf-life. Place your order today and feed your Russian rifle Russian ammunition.
(This ammunition is steel-cased. Some ranges do not allow rounds with steel cases, so make sure you double check before trying to use this ammunition at your area range.)
