This cartridge is loaded with a bonded jacketed hollow point bullet. Winchester’s proprietary bonding process means that the bullet’s jacket and lead core resist splitting apart as they pierce barriers and proceed to penetrate soft tissue. This ensures that the bullet retains the weight and momentum requisite for effectively deep penetration.

The JHP’s jacket is divided into six sections by a series of symmetrical notches. These strategically weaken the jacket to ensure that it splits apart evenly as the nose cavity fills with pressurized soft tissue. This is how the JHP consistently achieves 1.5x diameter expansion, which maximizes damage to surrounding soft tissues and decreases the risk of over-penetration that could injure an innocent bystander.

This ammo’s reliable Boxer primers and low-fouling propellant give its 165 grain JHP a muzzle velocity of 1,140 fps. That is supersonic, and fast enough to transfer over 450 ft lbs of energy to the target at close range. (For reference, minimum impact energy between 220 and 300 ft lbs is recommended for personal protection.)
