- Q & A
The .38 Special has been around for some time. It was created in 1898 by Smith and Wesson as the answer to an obvious need for a more powerful round. Its parent case with the .38 Long Colt and it was, indeed, an improvement over that round, which was what many U.S. Cavalry members were using in their failing attempts to halt the adrenaline-fueled charges of the Moro Warriors during the Philippine-American War. The .38 Special became popular fast, and by the 1920s it was being adopted as the standard issue of police departments all across the country. It remained the standard issue for about 70 years, and even though it was eventually replaced by the 9mm it’s still carried as a BUG (backup gun) by many officers.
If you carry a .38 Special for personal protection, it’s important you keep it loaded with the right ammunition. These particular rounds are manufactured by Speer and designed for fantastic power. Each round weighs in at 125 grain, making them fairly lightweight for the cartridge size. Being lightweight enables these rounds to fly down-range at higher speeds and also helps keep felt recoil to a minimum. These are Jacketed Hollow Point, JHP, rounds and begin to expand immediately upon impact. Because they’re jacketed expansion is controlled, allowing for greater penetration and a more devastating wound cavity. In addition, these are +P rounds, meaning they produce even greater velocity and energy than standard JHPs. Each round has a muzzle velocity of 945 feet per second and muzzle energy of 248 foot-pounds. This ammunition is specifically designed for self-defense.
When you order this case of ammunition from Speer you get 10 boxes containing 50 rounds apiece for a total of 500 defense rounds. If you’re thinking that 500 rounds is quite a lot and will last for some time, think again. Defense rounds produce more recoil and muzzle rise than target rounds, making it harder to make accurate shots. The only way to ensure placement and accuracy is through training with your chosen defense rounds, and this 500-round box is just what you need for the training that might one day save your life. Speer manufactures ammunition at their longtime factory in Lewiston, Idaho, according to exacting standards. Order and prepare to train like you may one day need to fight.
These are +P rounds and should only be used in guns designed for use with +P rounds.
