7.62x54r ammo is a rimmed rifle round designed in 1891 for use in the Russian Empire by their military. It was first made for the Mosin Nagant, and although more than a century has passed, it remains in use for the Dragunov and some sniper rifles. In fact, Winchester had a contract with the Russians at one point that resulted in their making the Model 1895 chambered in this cartridge. Some refer to it as the “7.62mm Russian” which isn’t actually accurate; the “R” stands for “rimmed” and referring to it as a the 7.62mm Russian makes it easier to confuse with the 7.62mm Soviet, which is actually the 7.62x39mm.
