- Q & A
Back in the 19th century, early shotgun slugs were lead balls sized so they’d just fit through the barrel of the shotgun. They were known as “pumpkin balls” or “pumpkin nuts” and although they were capable of decent force, they didn’t have very good accuracy and had to be used at close range. When the Brenneke slug came along in 1898 it introduced a revolutionary design with its fins, which were cast on the outside, and the wadding made of plastic or felt that served as drag stabilization. Foster slugs were created in 1931 and were made for smoothbore shotguns; they were hand cast from soft lead and Karl Foster then filed grooves into them. Foster slugs became the standard for American shotgun slugs and Brenneke became the European standard, and today we have high-performance, hard-hitting slugs like these 12 gauge slugs from Sellier and Bellot.
These are 12 gauge 1 ounce rifled slugs; they’re capable of tremendous force. It’s important for a shotgun slug to move fast, and these do. Each round bursts from the barrel of your shotgun with a muzzle velocity of 1345 feet per second, and you can be sure they deliver rapid energy transfer and serious knockdown power. This ammunition is a great choice for deer and feral hog hunting and is also favored by many shooters for home defense. It’s also a fun option for destroying pumpkins, watermelons, and other stationary targets. These are good quality slugs produced to exacting standards as evidenced by their reliable cycling and excellent performance.
You get 250 slugs in this box, so you’re going to have plenty of ammo to keep your shotgun well-fed. These slugs are made by Sellier and Bellot, a company that was founded in 1825 by Louis Sellier, who was later joined by Jean Maria Nicolaus Bellot. Sellier and Bellot got their start making percussion caps for the local infantry, but it didn’t take long for them to start making small arms cartridges and hunting rounds. The company saw terrific success almost immediately, and today they distribute their ammunition all around the world. If you want quality rifled slugs for your next hunt, try these Sellier and Bellot Special Slug Sport rounds. Don’t trust the outcome of your next hunt to anything but powerful ammunition.
