By ammunition standards the .40 S&W is a young round having just hit the market in 1990. It was the result of four years of handloading and customization following the 1986 FBI Miami Shootout and quickly built a dedicated fan base. During the shootout a pair of serial bank robbers led a team of FBI agents on a car chase that ended in a shootout in the streets of Miami. Although both robbers were shot early on they kept fighting long enough to shoot all but one agent, killing two. In the aftermath the FBI decided their agents needed more powerful rounds, but without the recoil of a 10mm, and in 1990 the .40 S&W was their answer.

This particular .40 S&W is manufactured by PMC (Precision Made Cartridge). Each round weighs in at 165 grain making these medium-weight for the cartridge size. That means these rounds are light enough to travel down-range at higher speeds but still heavy enough to impact targets solidly. These are Enclosed Metal Jacket-Non-Toxic, EMJ-NT, rounds and do not expand on impact. The bullet is fully enclosed so these fire cleanly and keep the air around you cleaner as well.
