- Q & A
300 Win Mag ammunition loaded with a bullet that’s legendary when it comes to taking down game.
At the end of World War II, surplus military ammunition began finding its way onto the commercial market, and the results were disappointing. Regardless of the shooter’s skill level performance was poor, and the cause was easily traced to the ammunition itself. Joyce Hornady noticed the problem and finally decided the best solution was simply to make his own ammunition, and although he could have just made it for himself he decided to produce it on a much larger scale. Hornady was founded in 1949 based on the belief that quality and performance are of great importance, and those same beliefs remain today.
Hornady manufactures these particular rounds for your .300 Win Mag. Each round weighs in at 150 grain which is considered rather lightweight for the cartridge size. Being lighter means these rounds travel towards targets at higher speeds and also reduces felt recoil somewhat, but don’t mistake them for anything but hard-hitting, because they certainly are. These are SP, Soft Point, rounds and begin to expand on impact. They expand more slowly than HPs, creating a deeper, more devastating wound cavity. This ammunition is designed specifically for hunting whitetail deer.
There are 20 rounds in this single box of ammunition from Hornady. With 20 rounds you can zero your optics, fire a couple practice shots, and go hunting. Of course, you don’t want to run out at an inopportune moment, so you might consider ordering more than one box. These rounds are produced in virgin brass cases with boxer primer and can be reloaded. Each round has a muzzle velocity of 3275 feet per second and muzzle energy of 3572 foot-pounds. Hornady manufactures ammunition at their longtime factory in Grand Island, Nebraska.
