- Q & A
Subsonic ammunition is designed to fit a special niche. It’s designed to travel velocities lower than the speed of sound, which eliminates the cracking sound of the bullet’s supersonic shockwave. This ammunition is typically manufactured at heavier weights in order to maintain as much energy as possible while moving at a slower speed. And although subsonic ammunition is occasionally used with a non-suppressed firearm in order to gain the benefits of the heavier bullet or quieter firing, it’s most often used with suppressors. The combination of a suppressor, or silencer, with subsonic ammunition drastically reduces how much noise firing the gun makes.
These subsonic rounds are made by Fiocchi, an established company in Lecco, Italy. Fiocchi was founded in 1876 by Giulio Fiocchi, who quickly deduced how best to flourish in the industry. At the time the factory was first opened, the change from muzzle-loaders to breech-loaders was taking place and Fiocchi quickly ceased production of black powder. They immediately came up with innovate methods of product diversification, and it wasn’t limited only to their products. Fiocchi has always designed and made their own production equipment, giving them greater control over the process; when it comes to ammunition, Fiocchi takes quality control quite seriously.
As is necessitated by its being a subsonic round, these are heavy 158 grain rounds. They’re FMJ’s created specifically for target practice and shooting drills and are made in virgin brass cases with boxer primer, so they can be reloaded. They have a muzzle velocity of 850 feet per second and muzzle energy of 253 foot-pounds. And although Fiocchi was founded and is headquartered in Italy, there is an American plant where ammunition is made for distribution here in the States. You get 50 subsonic rounds with your order. If you have a suppressor, these rounds are just what you’ve been looking for, and they can also be used without one. Order today for a quieter day at the range.
