- Q & A
In the ammunition world the .40 S&W is fairly young having just been created in 1990. It came to being after the 1986 FBI Miami Shootout, a grisly firefight between a pair of serial bank robbers and a team of FBI agents. Both robbers were shot early on in the battle but did not succumb to their wounds; instead, they shot every agent except one, killing two of the agents, one of whom was an expert marksman but had lost his glasses during the firefight. When the dust settled the FBI decided their agents needed to be better armed, and after four years of testing and careful handloading, the .40 S&W was created.
These .40 S&W rounds are made by Fiocchi. Each round weighs 155 grain, making them medium-weight for the cartridge size. Being in the middle of the weight spectrum gives these rounds the best of both worlds: they’re light enough to travel down-range at speeds higher than their heavier counterparts can manage, yet they’re heavy enough to pack a greater punch on impact. These are JHP, Jacketed Hollow Point, rounds and begin to expand on impact. Their jackets control expansion, allowing for greater penetration than standard HPs, creating a larger, more devastating wound cavity. These rounds are specifically designed for self-defense use and utilize Hornady’s popular XTP bullet.
When you order this single box of ammunition from Fiocchi you get 50 rounds, which is just enough to keep your pistol and spare magazines loaded and ready. In order to train you’re going to need more than one box. Far too many gun owners never practice with their chosen defense rounds, simply loading their pistols with the rounds and thinking nothing of it. But because defense rounds produce more recoil and muzzle rise than target rounds, accuracy and placement are harder to manage, and that means you need to practice. One day you practice – or lack thereof – could be all that stands between you and an attacker. Practice accordingly. Fiocchi manufactures ammunition at their factory in Lecco, Italy. Order now and keep your .40 S&W close at hand.
