- Q & A
In 1869 Emperor Aleksander I decreed a cartridge plant needed to be opened in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Barnaul Machine Tool Plant was built. The plant supplied the Russian military with literally half their ammunition in multiple wars; it wasn’t until later that they began producing ammunition for the general public. They were forced to evacuate their original plant under threat of German invasion during the Russian Civil War and moved to Podolsk, and then when the Germans again threatened to invade during World War II they went from Podolsk to Barnaul. Today they remain in Barnaul, and the Barnaul Machine Tool Plant has many subsidiaries, including Brown Bear, the maker of these .223 rounds.
At 62 grain these are pretty lightweight rounds for the .223 Remington, but being lighter weight does have one big pro: greater speed. These are SP rounds and begin to expand immediately upon impact. The expansion creates a catastrophic wound track while the way the bullet slows down as it expands protects innocent bystanders from over-penetration. Each round has a muzzle velocity of 3045 feet per second and, being a .223 round you know it’s going to hit with serious force. This ammunition is a good choice for varmint hunting and target practice.
When you place your order for this box of ammunition from Brown Bear, you get 500 rounds. You’re going to burn through this entire box faster than you might think, so it’s worth considering ordering at least two boxes. Brown Bear produces the cases for this ammunition using a bi-metal layering process to create steel cases that are berdan primed to ensure ignition. The finished rounds are coated with a special lacquer for consistent cycling and a longer shelf-life. With Brown Bear’s help you can be a high-volume shooter without going broke. Whether you have a varmint problem on your property or just want to go annihilate some watermelons, these SP rounds will keep your gun fed and happy.
(This ammunition is steel-cased. Some ranges do not allow rounds with steel cases, so make sure you double check before trying to use this ammunition at your area range.)
