More Details About Our 20 Rounds of 62gr FMJ M855 5.56x45 Ammo by Winchester
The U.S. Army adopted the 5.56x45 M855 cartridge in 1982 in an effort to achieve better long-range performance with the M249 light machine gun. You probably don’t have an M249 – but if you’ve got an AR-15, you can still have a good time at the range with this ammo!
This cartridge’s heavier 62 grain bullet does give it a higher G1 ballistic coefficient than the M193 round it was designed to replace (0.345 as opposed to about 0.243). Its trajectory should peak at 2.26” if you’re zeroed in at 200 yards, which isn’t quite as flat as the M193 round’s trajectory – but the M855 bullet avoids transonic destabilization until about 938 yards instead of 704.
If you’re planning on taking this ammo to a range which prohibits magnetic projectiles, don’t. The M855 bullet’s gilding metal jacket conceals a seven grain solid steel “penetrator” tip. It strengthens the bullet to increase its likelihood of penetrating sheet metal, but it is also certain to attract a magnet. The bullet’s tip is painted green to indicate that its core is not entirely made out of lead!
This is brand new ammo – it is not military surplus, and its new brass cases aren’t reloaded. Winchester simply doesn’t polish their military grade brass cases to enhance their cosmetics, but that does not impact functionality or reloadability.
