The total metal jacket is very similar to the full metal jacket. Both bullets have lead cores. Both bullets have copper jackets. Both bullets are incapable of terminal expansion, and accordingly aren’t ideal for self-defense. But unlike the FMJ, the TMJ’s jacket completely encapsulates its core. In other words, it doesn’t leave its core’s base exposed to the white hot heat of combusting propellant.

The benefits of firing TMJ ammo are twofold. First, you will dramatically decrease your exposure to lead – especially if you train in an indoor range where ventilation is subpar. Second, you will significantly decelerate barrel fouling. No lead burned off the bullet equals cleaner and more effective rifling!
